Hire machines and online videos make DIY driveway cleaning look simple. On paper it seems like a weekend job: rent a unit, blast the concrete, job done. In practice, the wrong technique or the wrong head on the wrong surface can do lasting damage — especially on decorative coatings and on raw concrete that still needs to look even afterwards.
We pressure clean driveways every working week as part of professional prep. The difference is not just equipment. It is knowing what the surface can take, when to ease off, and when chemicals and technique matter more than raw force.
Decorative coatings are easy to ruin
Many Peninsula driveways already have paint, acrylic sealer, older decorative finishes or previous coatings. High pressure in the wrong hands can scar, peel or strip those finishes unevenly. Once a coating is gouged or lifted in patches, you are often looking at more preparation, more product and more cost than a controlled clean would have required.
Even when the coating “comes off”, it rarely comes off cleanly. You can end up with a mottled surface that will not accept a new system evenly until it is repaired or fully stripped the right way. That is a long way from a simple wash-down.
Turbo heads on raw concrete can etch
A turbo nozzle (rotary turbo head) concentrates a lot of energy into a small spinning pattern. On the right industrial job, used carefully, it can be a useful tool. On residential driveways — especially raw or relatively soft concrete — it is one of the quickest ways to etch the surface.
Etching shows up as circular marks, uneven texture, light and dark patches, and a surface that looks permanently scarred even after it dries. Those marks do not hose off. They can telegraph through later sealers and coatings, so the driveway still looks damaged after you have spent money trying to improve it.
We see this often enough that it is worth saying plainly: if you are not sure what you are doing, do not put a turbo head on a visible residential driveway.
Pressure is only part of the job
Professional pressure cleaning is not just about how many PSI the machine claims. Distance from the surface, fan pattern, dwell time, detergents, and what is already on the concrete all matter. Softened organics, oil, old sealer and oxidised coatings each need a different approach. Blasting harder is rarely the answer.
On coated surfaces we work to clean without destroying what can be saved. On raw concrete we clean thoroughly without leaving etch patterns that will show forever. That judgement comes from doing this work daily, not from a single hire weekend.
When DIY makes the next job harder
If the plan is to seal or paint afterwards, poor DIY cleaning can create extra steps: uneven porosity, damaged coating, etched zones that need more attention, or contamination still left in the surface. The cheapest path is usually a controlled clean by someone who knows the surface type and the finish that will follow.
