Many people think pathway sealing and painting services are simply running to Bunnings and slapping some paint down, but it's a technical process requiring expertise. Our attention to detail ensures painted pathways withstand daily wear from foot traffic through to light vehicle loads, without compromising longevity.

The technicalities that matter

A key factor in successful pathway sealing and painting is understanding surface porosity. Concrete is inherently porous, with tiny holes and capillaries that allow paints and sealers to absorb. That porosity is crucial for adhesion: it lets the coating penetrate deeply and create a strong bond that resists peeling and cracking.

Not all surfaces are suitable. Glazed pavers, bricks or highly polished non-porous materials will not absorb paint effectively, leading to poor adhesion and premature failure. If your pathway includes glazed pavers or bricks, we advise against painting or sealing them - like painting glass: it may stick initially, but you can scratch it off with a nail.

A quick inspection determines suitability. A good rule of thumb: if water beads up on a natural surface, it is too non-porous. In some cases we can etch to improve paint receptivity where feasible.

When repainting or resealing over existing coatings, determining the type of existing product is essential to avoid compatibility issues. Coatings may be epoxy, acrylic, enamel, solvent-based or older oil-based paints - each requiring specific preparation and compatible topcoats.

We start with a thorough inspection, using a solvent test to identify coatings (acrylic dissolves, epoxy resists, enamel shows "chicken feet"). Enamel-based sealers such as Berger Jet Dry, often promoted as DIY at hardware stores, frequently fail prematurely in our experience - even with proper preparation. For those coatings we completely strip the surface with strippers, chemicals and pressure washing to create a clean base so high-quality paints adhere and last. This prep step is critical: mismatched coatings lead to delamination or bubbling.

How it comes together

We take the hassle out of the process. Once prepped, we apply two to three coats of high-quality, substrate-specific paint, allowing curing time between layers. For high-traffic areas or sloped surfaces we incorporate non-slip additives for safety. We are generally in and out within a 2-4 day process for a standard residential project. You can typically walk on the surface later the same day, but vehicle access should be avoided for 7 days after the final coat for optimal results.

Beyond pathways, our expertise extends to pool areas with slip-resistant coatings, exposed aggregate with UV-resistant systems, most pavers and bricks with matt, satin, gloss or high-gloss finishes, plus patios, garage floors and retaining walls.
