Pressure cleaning is more than blasting away dirt - it's a technical process that requires the right equipment, techniques and solutions to avoid damage to delicate surfaces. Many homeowners think it is a simple DIY with a hardware-store machine, but improper pressure can etch concrete, irreparably damage stencil oxide surfaces, timber or stone, or even strip paint - leading to further damage and costly rectification.

Surface sensitivity and method

A key factor in successful pressure cleaning is understanding coating and material sensitivity. Concrete, brick, raw timber and aggregate surfaces are porous, absorbing contaminants like oil, mould and salt that embed deeply over time. Thorough cleaning is essential before sealing or painting, as residue can cause adhesion failure.

Not all surfaces are suitable for high pressure. Timber (decks, raw weatherboards) or soft stone such as sandstone can be damaged by excessive force, leading to pitting or erosion. If your driveway is stencilled concrete with an oxide or stone finish, we adjust to lower-pressure machine-based methods to avoid surface stripping.

Soft washing also has its place: higher chemical, lower pressure approaches (for example sodium hypochlorite with surfactants, or linoleic acid on old timber decks) can renew surfaces where aggressive high pressure would destroy them. A quick inspection determines the right pressure - typically 500-4,500 PSI - high for concrete, lower for oxide finishes, timber and soft stone. We always test a small area first.

We use mild eco-friendly biodegradable detergents and citric acid to brighten and degrease, or stronger solutions such as hydrochloric acid where intentional etching or brick revitalisation is required. Chemical solutions penetrate pores, lifting organics, oil or bird droppings and preparing the surface perfectly for sealers.

When cleaning over existing coatings or stains, determining residue type is essential. Buildup may be oil-based, mould, or old sealers (acrylic, epoxy or solvent-based), each requiring specific pre-treatment. DIY bleach often does not clean thoroughly enough, leaving residue that traps moisture and promotes regrowth in humid Peninsula conditions. For stubborn oil, rust and paint we apply targeted removers before pressure washing.

We are generally in and out within a 1-2 day process for larger jobs and always strive to minimise disruption. Surfaces can often be walked on immediately. We clean up thoroughly afterwards - adjoining areas washed down, grass and flora rinsed - leaving the place looking great.

The process

1. Assessment

Inspect the surface, discuss goals, identify sensitive areas and contaminants, and choose the right pressure and chemistry.

2. Preparation & cleaning

Apply tested chemical solutions to brighten and degrease, with targeted treatments for oil or mould before washing.

3. Pressure application

Calibrated equipment adjusted for surface type - gentle for oxide, robust for concrete - to remove grime without damage.

4. Rinse, cleanup & follow-up

Thorough rinse, daily debris cleanup, and recommendations for bundling sealing where protection is the next step.

Beyond pressure cleaning, our expertise extends to concrete sealing applications. We seal exposed aggregate, paint garage floors with epoxy finishes, clean pool areas to remove algae, and treat pavers, bricks, patios and retaining walls. In Mount Martha we pressure clean pool areas to combat salt residue and chlorine buildup; in Langwarrin we refresh driveways with chemical solutions for pre-sealing prep. Focused driveway cleaning is also available when the drive is the main priority.

We live by "Do it right or don't do it at all." If we can't guarantee an outstanding clean, we won't proceed. If there are reasons the outcome will not be a 10/10, we explain fully and leave the decision to you.
