Exposed aggregate concrete (or exposed agg as it’s commonly called) is a popular choice for its aesthetic versatility and slip-resistant texture, but without proper sealing, it succumbs to weathering, staining, and erosion. Many assume sealing is a quick spray-and-go job, but it’s a precise process requiring expertise to maintain the surface’s integrity while delivers a long-lasting result. Our attention to detail ensures your sealed exposed aggregate driveway withstands day-to-day wear, vehicle loads, and environmental stress without fading, cracking or prematurely ageing.

Let’s explore the technicalities;

A key factor in successful exposed aggregate sealing is understanding the surface porosity. Exposed aggregate features a rough, porous texture where the cement slurry/paste is removed to reveal stones, creating capillaries that absorb moisture and contaminants if unsealed. This porosity is essential for sealer adhesion, allowing penetration that forms a protective barrier against water ingress and efflorescence. In addition, the product needs to be simultaneously designed to adhere to the stones.

However, not all surfaces are suitable; previously over-sealed aggregates may resist adhesion or absorption, leading to poor bonding and premature failure. For instance, if your exposed aggregate has had an old epoxy or two pack applied previously displaying non-porous patches, we recommend against sealing with the market leading solvent based sealers to avoid issues like bubbling or delamination. It is very circumstantial but in the worst instances we would recommend an industrial grade sealer to ensure a quality finish.

We use the metaphor of sealing polished marble: the product may sit on top, but under general wear and tear, it will crack and peel. A quick inspection determines suitability, but a good rule of thumb is the water test—if water beads up, the surface is too sealed; on occasion we can lightly etch it with a mild acid solution to improve receptivity, if feasible.

When resealing over existing coatings on exposed aggregate, determining the type of prior sealer is essential to avoid compatibility issues. Existing products could be water based acrylic, 2Pac, epoxy, or solvent-based acrylic, each requiring specific preparation and reapplication. Where a compatible existing sealer is found, we need to use a reactivation solution to ensure a full bond. Once applied and worked in, it requires 48 hours to set in.

In very close coastal areas like Dromana or Sorrento, where salt spray accelerates degradation, we prioritise industrial or commercial grade coatings like how you would apply Marine Grade Colorbond to your roof.

We start with a thorough inspection, using solvent tests to identify if there is an existing coating, the coating type and environmental conditions. Poor-quality enamels or DIY sealers, like those from hardware stores, often fail prematurely showing peeling/cracking/delamination (in addition to being poorly manufactured in the first place)

For these enamel based products, we unfortunately need to strip the surface completely using eco-friendly removers, chemicals, and pressure washing. This prep prevents delamination or bubbling, common pitfalls of just applying straight over it, while ensuring a durable and long lasting finish.

Once clean, we apply our first coat suited to the base. This step is critical, as mismatched sealers will lead to premature failure. Overall we apply two to a max three coats of our unique custom blend of Nutech sealers, allowing curing time between layers. For high-traffic or sloped surfaces, we incorporate non-slip additives during the process to enhance safety without dulling the aggregates’ look. These non-slip additives comply with AS 4586 and can offer up to a P4+ rating. This proprietary mix combines penetrating sealers for a wet-look with enhanced colour “pop”.

We are generally in and out within a 2-3 day process to minimise disruption. You can typically walk on the surface later the same day (weather dependent), but avoid vehicle access for six to seven days post-final coat for optimal curing.

The process is as follows:

Step 1: Assessment – We inspect the exposed aggregate surface, discussing your desired finish and checking for suitability, including porosity and looking for existing coatings.

Step 2: Preparation and Cleaning –We use our tested chemical cleaning solution—a mild, eco-friendly formula and detergents—to brighten the surface, removing dirt, efflorescence, and stains without damaging the aggregate stones. This step addresses cracks or gaps, ensuring a clean base for sealing.

Step 3: Application – We apply our custom blend of sealers in two coats (max three), with the penetrating base layer first to maximise colour, followed by the topcoat for shine and longevity. A day’s cure time between coats allows proper bonding.

Step 4: Cleanup and Follow-Up – We clean up after ourselves daily, tape off the area to prevent traffic, and return after 6-7 days to verify the seal’s performance, your satisfaction, and remove barriers.

Beyond exposed aggregate sealing, our expertise extends to various surfaces.
